Fall 2019: Crew Team Dominates Fox Chapel in Season Opener
The crew team crushed Fox Chapel in their opener Saturday, a challenging 9K head-to-head scrimmage on the Allegheny river. Led by coxswain Sophia and captain Emma in the stroke seat, the varsity women’s eight developed a winning strategy for this long course. While Fox Chapel thrashed their oars to start out ahead, Allderdice set their stroke rate at a low pace that allowed them to maximize power while conserving energy. The Dragons effortlessly overtook Fox Chapel as their rivals lost steam. Juniors Olivia, Thea, Sarah, Ana, Anna, and Mica and sophomore Ada then powered the boat through the next eight kilometers and finished hundreds of meters ahead of Fox Chapel.
The Dice mixed quad had a similarly stellar performance against the Fox Chapel men. Juniors Ben, Hannah, and Bobby and sophomore Caden took a commanding lead from the start of the race and finished more than a minute ahead of their rivals. Congratulations to the crew team!
The team has an exceptionally strong novice class this year, but are always looking for more teammates! Contact Coach AJ Smith for more info!
Spring 2019: Great rowing, Emma and Laura going to Nationals!
Dice crew team finished the regular season with top results at the Mercyhurst Regatta. Juniors Laura and Emma took first place in their varsity double. They also placed second at the Midwest Regional Championships and will be going on to compete at Nationals! In choppy waters on Saturday, the JV eight also took first place in a dramatic race: sophomore Thea's oarlock came undone partway through the race, and the boat dropped behind while she fixed it on the fly. Once she got it back in place, the girls pulled hard and overtook the first boat to win the race. Powering the victory alongside Thea were sophomores Sarah, Anna, Mica, and Olivia, along with freshman Ada and juniors Laura and Emma. Freshman coxswain Hannah urged the team on as boats zigzagged around them and waves crashed over the sides of the boat. The same five sophomores and two juniors from the JV eight also took third place in the varsity eight race, with help from novice sophomore Ana. The boys also had strong showings, with sophomore Alex and freshman Grant taking third place in their JV double. Alex, Grant, and freshman Caden also swept to second place in their four. Congratulations to the team and Coach AJ Smith on a great season!
